The life of Murray Raney

Murray Raney was born on October 14, 1885, in Carrollton, Kentucky, USA. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1909 without having attended high school. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree, was a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Oil Chemists’ Society and was also granted six American and European patents. The American Chemical Society honored the development of Raney® nickel catalysts with a National Historic Chemical Landmark designation in a ceremony at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on April 7, 2022.

The innovation of RANEY® nickel catalyst

Raney's most notable contribution to the world of chemistry came in 1926 when he developed the RANEY® nickel catalyst. This groundbreaking catalyst was a form of nickel metal that had undergone a unique activation process. The result was a highly porous, finely divided structure with an astonishingly high surface area. This structure allowed the catalyst to exhibit exceptional reactivity, making it a powerful tool in catalytic hydrogenation reactions.   • Fine Chemicals: RANEY® catalysts are used in hydrogenating various functional groups of niche intermediates in agrochemicals, coatings, dyes, etc.
  • Pharmaceuticals: RANEY® nickel catalyst enabled the reduction of various types of functional groups, a fundamental step in synthesizing pharmaceuticals. This catalyst facilitated the creation of essential drugs and advanced medicinal chemistry.
